THCa vs. Delta-9 THC

They’re two stages of the same molecule. Understanding the hand-off between them explains almost everything about how hemp flower is sold and used.

Quick answer: THCa is the raw, non-intoxicating acid in living/unheated flower. Delta-9 THC is the intoxicating form it becomes when heated. So THCa flower isn’t a high until you smoke, vape, or cook it — then it’s essentially Delta-9. The 0.3% legal limit is measured on Delta-9, which is why THCa flower can be sold as hemp.

The chemistry, simply

THCa carries an extra carboxyl group that keeps it non-intoxicating. Heat removes it (decarboxylation) and you’re left with Delta-9 THC. That’s why raw flower won’t get you high but a lit joint of the same flower will.

Why the difference matters legally
