THCa vs. Delta-9 THC
They’re two stages of the same molecule. Understanding the hand-off between them explains almost everything about how hemp flower is sold and used.
The chemistry, simply
THCa carries an extra carboxyl group that keeps it non-intoxicating. Heat removes it (decarboxylation) and you’re left with Delta-9 THC. That’s why raw flower won’t get you high but a lit joint of the same flower will.
Why the difference matters legally
Federal law caps Delta-9 THC at 0.3% by dry weight. THCa flower is grown and tested to stay under that Delta-9 line in its raw form, even though its total THC potential once heated is high. Related reading: what is THCa and what is THCa flower.
What it means for you
Effect-wise, once heated they’re the same experience. Legally, they’re labeled differently. For a drug test, both are a problem — heated THCa produces Delta-9 metabolites.
