What Is THCa? Effects, Legality, and How It Works

THCa is the raw, non-intoxicating form of THC found in the living hemp and cannabis plant. On its own it will not get you high — it only becomes intoxicating Delta-9 THC when you heat it. Here's exactly how it works, whether it's legal, and what it means for a drug test.

THCa vs. THC: what's the difference?

Every cannabinoid starts life as an acid. In the growing plant, there is very little actual THC — instead there is THCa, which carries an extra carboxyl group (that's the “a”). That tiny chemical difference is why raw THCa doesn't get you high: its shape doesn't bind efficiently to the CB1 receptors in your brain the way THC does.

Heat changes everything. When THCa is exposed to temperature — through smoking, vaping, or cooking — it loses that carboxyl group in a reaction called decarboxylation and becomes Delta-9 THC, the intoxicating compound. So the same flower is non-intoxicating in the jar and intoxicating in a joint.

Does THCa get you high?

Raw THCa, on its own, does not produce a high. But almost nobody consumes it raw. The moment THCa flower is smoked or vaped, or an edible is baked, it decarboxylates into Delta-9 THC and becomes fully intoxicating. In practice, treat a THCa product as you would any THC product: it will get you high when used as directed.

Is THCa legal?

Hemp-derived THCa is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, which defines legal hemp as cannabis containing less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. Will THCa make you fail a drug test?

Very possibly — and you should assume yes. Standard drug tests don't look for THCa or THC directly; they screen for THC metabolites your body produces after you consume THC. If you are subject to drug testing for work, sports, or legal reasons, avoid THCa and all THC products, including full-spectrum CBD.
