Does Hemp Show Up on a Drug Test?
Short answer: yes, it can — and you should assume it will. Hemp-derived products are federally legal, but that has nothing to do with what a drug test detects. Here's exactly why, how long it can last, and what (if anything) is safer if you're tested.
Why “federally legal” doesn't help you here
Hemp products are legal because they contain less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. But a drug test isn't measuring legality — it's looking for the metabolites (mainly THC-COOH) your liver produces after any THC enters your body. Legal hemp still contains and converts to THC, so it produces the same metabolites as any cannabis. The test cannot tell “legal” THC from any other THC.
Which hemp products can trigger a positive?
- THCa flower, pre-rolls, vapes: once heated, THCa becomes Delta-9 THC. High risk.
- Delta-8 and Delta-9 edibles: both are forms of THC. High risk.
- Full-spectrum CBD: contains trace THC that can build up with regular use. Moderate risk.
- Broad-spectrum CBD: most THC removed, but trace amounts may remain. Lower, not zero, risk.
- CBD isolate: pure CBD, no THC. Lowest risk — but cross-contamination in cheap products happens.
How long does THC stay detectable?
There is no single answer — it depends on how often you use, your dose, your metabolism and body fat, and the test type. As a rough guide for urine tests: a single use may clear in a few days, while daily use can remain detectable for several weeks. Hair tests look back much further. Because the range is so wide, never assume you'll test clean by a certain date.
